Salient Features of the Field Technician (Networking and Storage) Course

This section lists some of the key aspects of each of the modules within this course.

As a field technician, you need to have a working knowledge of hardware essentials like computer internals, memory and storage, troubleshooting and maintenance. In this module, you will learn about the following:

  • Different component of a computer and assembly of a computer system. Learn and differentiate the types of hardware components in the computer 
  • Layout, components, form factors and other features of a mother broad
  • Troubleshooting methods and troubleshooting system, storage and power supplies
  • Memory types, slot types and form factors
  • Storage types, methods of storage and different hardware components used in storage
  • Types of printers and scanners to recognize features
  • Recognize the types of laptop devices and to understand note book concepts.
  • Install and configure operating system and drivers.
  • Work etiquette and safety etiquette

Once you learn the basics of hardware like motherboards, memory, storage and their troubleshooting techniques in the previous module, you are ready to learn about networking essentials. As a good field technician, you should learn about the on-the-ground networking fundamentals like cabling, OSI concepts and so on. You should also learn how to interact with customers and team members and manage conflicts. This aspect is also covered in this module. 

The networking essentials you will learn are: 

    • Networking fundamentals and OSI Concepts 
    • Types of applications
    • Colour coding for the Ethernet cables and crimping
    • Cisco Router Internal Hardware Basics, Router Boot Sequence, Configuring IP address on Serial and Fast Ethernet Interfaces, Configuring Console, VTY lines Passwords
    • Network design and configuration

As you move on to the next set of modules in this course, you will learn about Windows clients, performance, windows server, Linux server and IT security fundamentals. As you learn the installation, configuration and troubleshooting, you must also be adept at communicating and recording issues and solutions. At the end of this module you will be taught basic communication skills and how to work in a team.

Windows 7 and Windows Server

Key concepts covered in this section are:

  • Servers, performance analysis and tools configuration.
  • Install and upgrade servers.
  • Configure, maintain and perform backup and recovery.
  • Directory services and different functional levels.
  • Secure domains, create users, maintain group policies.
  • Installation and configuration of directory services. 
  • Methods of creation of user accounts, groups accounts, computer accounts, delegating administration 
  • Disaster recovery and backup.

Linux Server

Key concepts covered in this section are:

  • Linux features, basic Linux commands
  • Server and services installation and configuration
  • Fault analysis, file system corruption
  • Network adaptor, basic services, storage management

IT Security

Key concepts covered in this section are:

      • Install and configure Outlook 
      • Anti-virus concepts, identify types and indication of virus, worms, Trojan.
      • Understand compatibility issues and common errors
      • Recognize basic security risks
      • Fix system vulnerability and measures for prevention

Effective Communication and Planning Skills

As a field technician who frequently troubleshoots issues has to constantly work with customers, internal teams and managers to resolve issues. You must be able to comprehend the issue, decide on the service to be provided and communicate effectively in formal situations. In each section of this module, you are trained to understand how to set goals, improve reading skills, understand reactions, verbal communication and comprehension. You will learn different methods of developing a positive attitude, awareness and how to prioritize tasks.

Some of the key ITIL concepts you will learn are:

  • Understand the method of monitoring, measuring and reporting.
  • Understand the method of CSF, KPIs and Activity.
  • Understand the methods of SLA, timeliness, response and resolution data.
  • Understand the problem management process flow and determination resolution.
  • Understand the methods problem management, tracking report and control measures.
  • Understand the methods tracking report and control measures.

Criteria for assessment for each Qualification Pack (QP) will be created by the Sector Skill Council (SSC). Each performance criteria (PC) will be assigned Theory and Skill/Practical marks proportional to its importance in NOS.

The total marks for the assessments for all the modules in this course is 400. The passing percentage is 70%
